Training in documentary filmmaking by Daily Trust Foundation



Media Enterprise Lab, a new project powered by the Daily Trust Foundation, is designed to help media and journalism professionals build new careers from simple skills learned on the job. With support from the MacArthur Foundation, this project is a direct response to the challenges faced by journalists if they lose their formal jobs. Media Enterprise Lab will deepen journalists’ understanding and skills in emerging areas of multimedia journalism and modern technology, and build their ability to engage in freelance work, independent digital media practice and business creation, by as a second career.

Training in documentary filmmaking

Documentary Filmmaking training is aimed at journalists with fundamental knowledge of video production, and seeking to acquire the skills necessary to produce short or long documentaries for radio, television and digital platforms. The training, which will span a two-month period with breaks for hands-on fieldwork, will take participants through the fundamentals of filmmaking, including story idea generation, efficient camera handling, light and sound control, and convenient editing processes. Led by expert facilitators in filmmaking, the training will be practical in nature and participants will be introduced to modern tools of documentary filmmaking. It is geared towards impacting skills that would help participants earn income.

The training is heavily subsidized, but a nominal fee of N50,000 must be paid by each participant to cover the cost of registration, training materials and the certificate of competency.
