The Tokyo Gap Financing Market (TGFM) announced the 20 projects selected for the second edition of the fundraising event, which is expected to take place virtually in the TIFFCOM content market (November 1-3).

This year’s submissions saw an increase in dramas featuring LGBTQ and social minorities in lead roles, as well as films dealing with diversity and changes in social and personal contexts, primarily targeting a teen audience. Of the 20 selections, five are made by women and ten are produced by women.

The line-up includes Elise Girard’s international co-production project Sidonie in Japan, taking place in Kyoto and starring Isabelle Huppert; a new, untitled feature film project by Atsushi Funahashi, whose previous works have screened at festivals in Berlin, Busan and Tokyo; and Today Tomorrow… By Ray Yeung from Hong Kong, whose latest film Suk Suk has also performed in Berlin and Busan.

TGFM aims to provide producers of feature films and TV series projects who need additional funding with the opportunity to meet one-on-one with industry experts to support their projects. In order to be eligible for submission, projects must have 60% of the total budget (50% for TV series projects) already secured and must include an Asian element.

Among the projects selected for last year’s inaugural edition of TGFM was Indonesian filmmaker Edwin Revenge is mine, everyone else pays cash, who won the Golden Leopard at this year’s Locarno Festival.
