Other winners from the world of feature films are Last night in Soho (Support visual effects), Spider-Man: No Coming Home (Environment created), Jungle Cruise (Special [Practical] Effects), Raya and the last dragon (Simulation) and Bullfinch (Animated character).

The Disney+ Marvel series Loki, which led all series with four names, kicked off the TV categories with a win for Compositing & Lighting in an Episode. AppleTV+ To see won for Supporting Visual Effects, and the streamer Foundation won the Effects Simulations award. by Netflix the witcher scored a win for the animated character.

Saba; Reef of Hope (watch it here) topped the commercials realm with two wins and vidgame Call of Duty: Vanguard won for visual effects in a real-time project.

Visual Effects Society Executive Director Eric Roth opened the show – which was Go being hosted by veteran Patton Oswalt, but he has a broken leg. So the organization called in backup: Drew Carey. Alas, he had “an emergency” and couldn’t do it either, Roth said.

The ceremony kicked off with a wild VFX reel set to Kiss’ “Rock and Roll All Nite” — classic rock is the music of choice tonight — followed by a few announcements. Roth said VES’ growing international reach will be reflected in the new VESglobal.com web domain, and the inaugural VES Technology Award will be launched at next year’s gala.

Two-time Oscar winner and current nominee Guillermo del Toro is this year’s recipient of the VES Award for Creative Excellence, but he was in bad weather and was not in attendance. His longtime producing partner J. Miles Dale agreed on del Toro’s behalf.

Lucasfilm EVP/GM Lynwen Brennan, who oversees companies such as Lucasfilm, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, earned a permanent O by accepting the VES Lifetime Achievement Award.

There was also an early tribute to VFX legends Douglas Trumbull (2001: A Space Odyssey, Close Encounters with Blade Runner) and Bill Taylor (Blade Runner, Star Trek: The Next Generation), who died within the past year.

Since the VES Awards launched in 2002, the film’s main winner has won the visual effects Oscar in 10 of 19 years, but neither of the last two. Last year, Netflix The midnight sky won the VES honor, but Warner Bros. Principle won the Oscar. In 2020, Disney The Lion King won the VES award ahead of Universal 1917 winning the Oscar.
