(hereinafter “SEKISUI”) is pleased to announce that its company High Performance Plastics has developed a transparent and flexible type of radio wave reflective film for 5G communications by combining the distinguished film and optical adhesive technologies of SEKISUI with metamaterial technology from Meta Materials Inc. headquartered in Canada.
SEKISUI verified the radio wave environment of the film with the collaboration of DOCOMO Innovations, Inc. headquartered in the United States and confirmed that the product, having unprecedented transparency and radio wave scattering characteristics , provides wide frequency coverage useful for 5G and 6G communications.
1. Development context
In 5G and 6G radio wave communications, higher frequency ranges than conventional LTE (4G) services are used: wavebands less than 6 (3.6 GHz or more) and millimeter (24 GHz or more ). Millimeter waves have a high transmission capacity but have a strong directivity; when they reach a protective object such as a building, they attenuate and deteriorate the quality of communications. The installation of a base station or a relay station can solve the deterioration, but such a solution involved a high additional investment and a more reasonable cost solution was required.
While millimeter wave reflection plates, which have a pattern of metamaterial copper processed on the printed circuit board, were developed as a possible measure to solve such a challenge, SEKISUI drew attention to a reflection film of transparent and flexible radio waves that would have a metamaterial structure and would not spoil the landscape. Believing that it can provide a solution by incorporating its optical adhesive film and material technologies into such a transparent and flexible plate, SEKISUI has embarked on research and development efforts.
The company has made a transparent and flexible type of high frequency radio wave reflection film, which can be used not only for millimeter wave ranges, but also for wide band from 2 GHz to 60 GHz while presenting 95% total light transmittance by integrating SEKISUI’s technologies with Meta NANOWEB (R) (R) (* 1) transparent metamaterial nano-patterned material technology and its RML (R) (* 2) manufacturing technology.
2. Product overview
This film consists of a metamaterial layer with a high frequency radio wave reflection structure, a highly transparent adhesive, a special coating that protects the surface of the film, and a special adhesive layer. When placed on a surface such as a wall or ceiling, the film reflects radio waves, allowing them to reach protected areas. This technology makes it possible to improve a communication environment at a lower cost and in a shorter period of time, compared to the installation of a base station or a relay station. The film, which is transparent and flexible and does not require an electrical connection, can be installed anywhere, on any surface of any shape, without spoiling the appearance of a place where it is installed.

3. Effect demonstration experiment
Using simulation technology from DOCOMO Innovations, Inc., SEKISUI verified the effects of the product at the planning stage and confirmed the effects indoors in the MIRAIT Corporation’s headquartered solution co-creation lab. Tokyo. The demonstration experiment confirmed that a sheet of reflective film placed 30 meters from the base station properly controls the reflection of radio waves, thus improving the communication infrastructure over a large area.

4. Future projects
Using the advantages of transparency, flexibility, lightness and operation without power connection, SEKISUI plans to distribute the product for use in office buildings, factories, shopping malls, medical and care facilities, various sports facilities, farms, ranches, smart cities, metro, shopping streets, rolling stock and road infrastructure while exploring other applications including temporary or emergency sites providing first aid services , construction sites and camping areas. SEKISUI plans to start distributing product samples in fiscal year 2022, with the aim of achieving a sales target of 6 billion yen by fiscal year 2026.
