Our guide to discounts and offers

Spending the afternoon in an air-conditioned movie theater can be the perfect solution on a hot summer day.

Unfortunately, like seemingly everything else, prices have gone up in theaters across the country. And it’s no fun having to break the bank just to see “Jurassic Park Part 48” (or whatever chapter we’re currently on).

The good news is that many theaters offer discount days and other budget deals, making for much cheaper cinematic experiences for connoisseurs.

And we want you to know.

So, we’ve come up with this little roundup of great discounts offered by the Bay Area’s major theater chains. This way, moviegoers can beat the heat and the inflation at the same time.

AMC Discount Tuesday

The world’s largest movie theater chain, with many Bay Area locations, offers plenty for its AMC Stubs members on Tuesdays. Tickets are usually around $6.50 (at most Bay Area locations), which can be over 50% savings. Find more information about AMC Stubs at www.amctheatres.com/amcstubs.

AMC matinees

Of course, it’s fun to go to an evening screening. But fans will save up to 30% off regular evening prices if they catch a movie starting before 4 p.m. at an AMC location.

Cinemark Discount Tuesdays

Basically, everyone saves on ticket purchases made on Tuesdays at Cinemark spots. Members of the movie chain’s Movie Rewards program save even more. It’s $6.50 for non-members, while members get in for $6. More information at www.cinemark.com/movie-rewards-info.

Cinemark Early Bird

Cinemas are offering discounted tickets for the first matinee of each film starting before 1 p.m.

Drive-in discounts

The Bay Area-based company West Wind Drive-In offers great discounts on Tuesday nights at its three local locations — San Jose, Concord and Sacramento. Regular admission is $6, while children (ages 5-11) are only $2. Children under 5 enter for free. Plus, since we’re talking drive-ins, you can save more by stocking the car with your own snacks and treats instead of buying popcorn and the like from the concession stands.

Regal Theater Tuesdays

The chain, with locations in Oakland, Dublin, San Ramon, Berkeley and elsewhere, also offers great discounts on Tuesdays. Regal Crown Club members get discounted movie tickets as well as 50% off their popcorn.
