NEW DELHI: Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Releasing, the distribution arm of Sony, announced that their superhero film Spider-Man: No Path Home will be released in India on December 17th. The film will arrive in theaters ahead of the big Christmas weekend which has already been locked down for Aamir Khan Laal Singh Chadha and the Telugu film by Allu Arjun Pushpa which will be dubbed in Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam.
Certainly, with the gradual reopening of cinemas across the country and the possibility of Maharashtra granting clearances by next month, Hollywood studios are looking to make up for lost time in India by bringing a bunch of previously released movie titles into other parts of the world.
Warner Bros has movies like Fast and Furious 9 scheduled for September while Sony Pictures has Venom, Peter Rabbit 2 and Escape room 2 which can fill the void in theaters in the first few weeks when there are fewer Indian films available. Film trade experts said the opening of major metros, especially in the south, should pave the way for these films whose main markets are Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
In 2019, Hollywood, with a combination of spectacular superhero flicks and low budget, sweeter films, recorded box office collections of nearly Rs 1,225 crore in India, which was over Rs crore. 900-950 which he won in 2018. Dubbing of these films in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, apart from the comprehensive marketing and localization campaigns of Hollywood studios, has greatly contributed to their appeal in the country. . Assuming feelings remain subdued and people are reluctant to visit theaters in the next couple of months, the first batch of Hollywood titles could be considered together to make around Rs. 300 crore in box office revenue, said film industry experts.
