The Korean Film Festival (KFF) in the Philippines is back with a live screening two years after the pandemic began.
This year’s film festival will open on August 10 with seven Korean films at SM Aura Premier in Taguig for a select audience.
The Korean Cultural Center (KCC) in the Philippines, under the Korea Culture and Information Service (KOCIS), invites everyone to watch the films originally released in 2020 and 2021.
These are “Deliver Us From Evil” (directed by Hong Wonchan, 2020), “Escape from Mogadishu” (directed by Ryu Seung-wan, 2021), “The Novelist’s Film” (directed by Hong Sangsoo, 2021), “Miracle: Letters to the President” (directed by Lee Janghoon, 2021), “Snowball” (directed by Lee Woojung, 2021), “The Day I Died” (directed by Park Jiwan, 2020) and “Maybe Love” (directed by Jo Eunji, 2021).
According to KCC, these films will be shown at five SM Cinemas outlets in Metro Manila.
The opening film “Deliver Us From Evil” will be screened at SM Aura Premier’s Cinema 2. Public screening of the seven films will be available from August 11 to 14 at SM Mall of Asia, SM Megamall, SM City Grand Central, SM North Edsa and SM Southmall. Public screening is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Two Korean directors will attend the opening ceremony. Hong Wonchan directed “Deliver Us From Evil” and Lee Woojung directed “Snowball.” The public will be able to meet them and ask them questions after the screening of the opening film on August 10.
Hong Wonchan is one of the so-called post-Korean directors and has made several successful films. “Deliver Us From Evil” drew nearly 4.36 million Korean moviegoers amid the pandemic in 2020.
His first film “Office” was also invited to the midnight screening of the 68th Cannes Film Festival in 2015.
Lee Woojung is an up-and-coming independent filmmaker who continues to contribute to the Korean independent film industry. She started her acting career after studying theater and film in college. She made her first independent short film “Neither Die Nor Go” in 2012 and started to gain more attention with her recent film “Snowball”.
There will also be “Talk with the Filmmakers” on August 11 at 1:30 p.m. at the FDCP Cinematheque Center Manila where the two directors will share the challenges and processes of filmmaking.
Two Filipino directors will also join the discussions and share their own experiences. This event aims to show the exchanges of film industries of the two countries and provide guidance and knowledge on film production and filmmaking to the Filipino public, especially Filipino film students.
The 2022 Korean Film Festival is in partnership with the Philippines Film Development Board, Korean Film Council, Korea Tourism Organization Manila Office and SM Cinema.
