Keanu Reeves explains how John Wick director Chad Stahelski got the role of “Handsome Chad” in The Matrix Resurrections.
Keanu Reeves recently explained that John wick Director Chad Stahelski had a role in the upcoming the Matrix resurrections. Reeves returns as Thomas Anderson / Neo alongside Carrie-Ann Moss as Trinity. The film features a star cast in the highly anticipated fourth entry of The matrix series. For fans familiar with Reeves John wick series, the public will soon be able to see Stahelski in Matrix resurrections.
Stahelski worked as a stuntman for over 20 years, but made his directorial debut with John wick in 2014. Before teaming up with Reeves on John wick and its sequels, including the next one John Wick Chapter 4, Stahelski worked as Reeves’ understudy on the original Matrix trilogy. Stahelski then worked as a stunt coordinator on The matrix sequelae. Now like Matrix resurrections gearing up for release, Reeves and Stahelski team up again with Stahelski playing an interesting role in the film.
As a stuntman, coordinator and director, Stahelski spent most of his time either behind the camera or with his face masked to let audiences believe the actor in the scene. Now, it looks like Stahelski will have a bit more time in front of the camera, at least from Reeves’ description of the character. In a recent interview with Collider, Reeves discussed Stahelski’s role as the character in “Handsome Chad” and how he got the role in Matrix resurrections. Reeves also discussed how Stahelski’s relationship with writer / director Lana Wachowski on previous films played a role in “the intertwining of life and art” in the film. Read the full quote below:
“I think that [Stahelski and Wachowski] have a genuine affection for each other, and I know Chad always describes attending Wachowski Film School. Chad was my stuntman in the trilogy and I think Lana, the director and screenwriter, enjoys Chad and his directing. And there was a lot that Lana was trying to weave together in terms of life and art for everyone in the movie and the artists in the movie. And I think for her, it made her laugh that Chad was the husband of Trinity’s Matrix counterpart. “
As Reeves describes it, Wachowski’s influence on Stahelski’s cinematic approach is rather decisive when one considers the success of the John wick series. Stahelski’s work has proven him to be a successful filmmaker with an eye for action, world-building and strong character development, and the influence of the original. Matrix the trilogy is clear in his films. For Stahelski to find Wachowski the Matrix resurrections as “Handsome Chad” gives a cute nod to their history together. And to Reeves, it seems like “Handsome Chad” was something fun for Wachowski to see Stahelski come to life in the role.
While many plot details have been kept under wraps, including how exactly Neo and Trinity will come together, it will be interesting to see how much screen time Stahelski has. Since Reeves has not revealed how much of an impact Stahelski’s role as “Handsome Chad” will have on the film’s overall story, the fact that the Trinity Matrix counterpart has a husband, may give Reeves’ Neo another person to face while he’s in The Matrix. And with Stahelski having been Reeves’ stuntman in the original trilogy, it will also be interesting to see if the character resembles Reeves in any way. Matrix resurrections arrives in theaters and streaming the same day on HBO Max on December 22.
