The 5th installment of Film Fest 919, a festival editor that Joey Magidson is very fond of, is currently taking place in North Carolina. To that end, they recently announced that the final recipient of their Distinguished Screenwriter Award will be Rian Johnsonfor Glass onion: a mystery at loggerheads. Last year, they bestowed the honor on Sean Baker and Chris Bergoch for red rocket, Joey actually moderating a conversation with Bergoch. You can see what the festival has to say below, along with an image from the conversation after the award was presented last year.
Here is the press release from Film Fest 919:
5e edition of 919 Film Fest got off to a great start Wednesday night with JD Dillard’s film DEDICATION, with Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell, in the presence of Dillard and producer – and former UNC – Rachel Smith. Following the presentation of Film Fest 919’s first HORIZON AWARD to JD Dillard, the film received an enthusiastic response from audiences and was later treated to a Conversation with the Filmmakers moderated by Vanity Fair’s Katey Rich. It was the perfect kickoff to a weekend of outstanding feature films!
Film Fest 919 chose to honor ONION GLASS: A KNIFE MYSTERY Oscar®-nominated screenwriter and director Rian Johnson with the Distinguished Screenwriter Award during the closing night festivities on Sunday, October 23. While Johnson is currently traveling overseas with the film and cannot be in Chapel Hill, the festival will play a special recorded message accepting this estimated award.
According to Film Fest 919 founders Randi Emerman and Carol Marshall, “When we were deciding who to honor this year with this award, we both felt that Rian Johnson’s screenplay stood out so significantly that we couldn’t quite just not letting him not be able to attend affect that decision. Johnson is in good company, with previous recipients being Anthony McCarten (two popes)Chloe Zhao (nomadland) and Sean Baker and Chris Bergoch (red rocket).
Onion of glass: a mystery at loggerheads, starring Daniel Craig alongside Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, with Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista, marks a return to the franchise started by Johnson. Benoit Blanc (Craig) returns to peel back the layers in this new thriller. This new adventure finds the intrepid sleuth in a lavish private estate on a Greek island, but how and why he got there is just the first of many puzzles. Blanc soon encounters a distinctly disparate group of friends who gather at the invitation of billionaire Miles Bron for their annual reunion. As with all the best murder mysteries, each character harbors their own secrets, lies, and motivations. When someone is found dead, everyone is a suspect.
Film Fest 919 continues until Sunday, October 23 with a specially curated selection of the most anticipated films of the season. Movies are shown here before they hit theaters, giving moviegoers the privilege of telling their friends they’ve seen some of the best new movies before anyone else in the state. The films are presented in two places: Silverspot Cinema and The Lumina Theater. Tickets are still available at www.filmfest919.com or on the site of the cinemas. Come see the movies before they spread!!
