Dune Wins Best Visual Effects at the 2022 Oscars

Dune won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects at the 94th Academy Awards. Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi masterpiece has won six awards so far at the 2022 ceremony, making it (at the time of writing) the biggest movie of the night to date.

Paul Lambert was the visual effects supervisor on Dune. Lambert previously worked on Villeneuve’s other sci-fi epic, Blade Runner 2049, but has a long and storied film career. Lambert started working on films like Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life and the Day After. After that he worked on movies like Tron: Legacy and the Marvelous First Man.

Other nominees in the Visual Effects category included Ryan Reynold’s Free Guy, Daniel Craig’s latest Bond film No Time To Die, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Shang-Chi and Spider-Man: No Way Home. It will be a bitter pill for Spidey fans who were denied a Best Picture nomination despite being one of the biggest box office movies of 2021.

Hosted by Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes, the 94th Academy Awards managed to avoid controversy before it even started. The inclusion of a Fan Favorite category was the first thing that upset people.

While that might sound like a good idea, there have been some valid criticisms that the fact that it’s open to public voting means that studios with deeper pockets may be able to sway the public with strategies of expensive marketing.

There was also criticism over the decision to pre-register the presentation and acceptance of eight awards tied to ‘below the line’ achievements.

This caused widespread outrage in the film community, with directors, actors and producers coming forward to criticize the decision, perhaps most notably Steven Spielberg.

“I have a strong belief that this may be the most collaborative medium in the world,” Spielberg wrote in a statement. “We all make movies together…I feel like at the Oscars there’s no overtaking. There’s no under the line. We’re all on the same line, bringing the best of us to tell the best stories possible. And that means to me that we should all have a place at the dinner table together live at 5 o’clock.
