A new documentary short exploring the life and work of Clementine Hunter will premiere on Louisiana Public Broadcasting.
Hunter was a self-taught artist whose work shed new light on the untold stories of African American workers.
“Clementine Hunter’s World†premieres at 7 pm Monday on WLPB, Channel 27. A recall is scheduled for 8 pm Saturday. The documentary has previously been shown at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture.
“The Louisiana-produced film combines period photographs with Hunter’s colorful paintings to bring its story to life. From her tiny cabin on the grounds of rural Melrose Plantation, Clementine Hunter has painted thousands of images recalling her story. , providing a visual journal of black life in Melrose and revealing colorful stories of life along the Cane River in Louisiana, â€a press release says.“ Today, the paintings she once sold for pennies sell for thousands of dollars and are on display in private collections and prestigious galleries around the world. “
The goal of Art Shiver, the writer and director of the documentary, was to create the entire film in Hunter’s home state. The production team – responsible for everything from cinematography to original music, graphics and marketing – are originally from Louisiana.
Shiver, along with historians Hunter Tom Whitehead, of Natchitoches, and Henry Price, of Shreveport, will join Robyn Merrick of Southern University on the night of the broadcast to provide additional perspectives and stories on the making of the documentary.
