It wasn’t that long ago that drive-ins were an important part of the American film landscape, offering people the ability to watch movies on the big screen from the comfort of their cars. While many of them have closed, they have started to make a comeback in recent years.

And, now that the movies are releasing exclusively in theaters again, now is a good time to think about modern films that have been released in recent years that would make for a good viewing experience in a drive-in theater.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Drive-ins have always excelled at showing sci-fi movies – many of which are on a low budget – so it would make sense if they wanted to show something like guardians of the galaxy, which has a more relaxed and fun tone than most of the other entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It would be the perfect movie to laugh and enjoy, while sitting in the comfort of your car, especially since it trades so much with nostalgia (especially in its soundtrack).

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Mad Max: Fury Road was one of the best deals in the Mad Max franchise, featuring kinetic power in its cinematography and powerful performances by Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. Again, it’s fitting for this to show up in a drive-through, as its luscious approach to its story – including its horrid, over-the-top villain Immortan Joe and its action-packed narrative – is very much in line with the types of movies. which have often been shown in such places in previous periods of cinema history.

Halloween Kills (2021)

Even though drive-ins showed many different types of movies in their heyday, some proved particularly popular, and one of them was the horror movie. While there have been a number of very popular and blockbuster horror films over the past decade, there are two things that stand out. Halloween kills. First, it’s another successful entry into a long-running franchise and of course it stars Jamie Lee Curtis as well. Seeing it in a drive-in would be a nice tribute to the original film (itself a popular drive-in attraction).

In the heights (2021)

The last few years have seen an increase in theatrical musicals, and that includes In the heights, the successful adaptation of the musical of the same name (written by Lin-Manuel Miranda).

It’s the perfect type of movie to watch in a drive-in, both because the song and dance numbers are expertly interpreted, but also because the intimate surroundings of a car, especially one with a decent sound system, would allow an immersive experience in the utopian world of the musical.

Birds of Prey (2020)

Margot Robbie Harley Quinn Birds of Prey

Even though DC Extended Universe struggled somewhat to achieve Marvel Cinematic Universe success, movies like Birds of prey show that he has a lot of potential. As guardians of the galaxy, there’s a pulp to this movie that sets it apart from other DCEU entries, most of which tend to be quite dark in their outlook and aesthetic. Birds of prey, on the other hand, is a fun (and funny) movie, which makes it a good choice for someone heading to the drive-in for a little entertainment.

The Suicide Squad (2021)

Although some fans are debating whether the first or second version of The suicide squad is the best movie, there’s no doubt that James Gunn’s take on the material is a bit lighter. He’s got plenty of solid performances – including Idris Elba and John Cena – and has the luscious appeal that has always been the hallmark of these particular superheroes. That would make her a great choice for the drive-in crowd, who would appreciate her sending the classic superhero formula.

Mortal Kombat (2021)

Kano meets Cole Young in Mortal Kombat 2021

There are only a few video game franchises that have proven to be as long lasting as Mortal combat, which has been going on for several decades. So, there was a lot of anticipation for this new version of the film, which sets the stage for many sequels to come. Like the other entries in the series, it includes a lot of violence and stylized combat, which, combined with the nostalgia factor, makes this the type of film that would be perfect for a drive-in.

Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)

As Mortal combat, Godzilla, and King Kong are both well-established characters, and each of them claims to be the most famous monster on the big screen. Since the launch of the MonsterVerse, a clash between these two titans was inevitable. The most recent movie is a little silly at times, with twists and turns and illogical events, but that’s precisely what makes it so fun.

The MCU continued its box office dominance with Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings, who broke new ground for his incorporation of Asian mythology into his universe. Plus, it features some of the best action sequences created in recent entries to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As a result, it captures just the right mix of action and adventure, making it the kind of movie one would love to see in a drive-in atmosphere.

Spencer (2021)

Although Spencer is a biopic about a pivotal weekend in the life of Princess Diana, it’s also a gothic horror film that documents her gradual descent into a form of madness. The Sandringham Estate is exactly the type of place that makes a grim backdrop for horror films of this type. Since drive-ins have historically been the perfect setting for those who want to experience the vibe of a moody horror movie, this would be exactly the type of movie that would appeal for sure.
